The following are some of the practical rules which I feel that each one of us as a motorist
should follow for our own safety. Iam not an expert in driving but just thought through my driving
experience of more than 100K Kms that would be ideal for safe driving.
After going through below you may think that "Arre ye to maloom hai","Naya kya bola","India
mein ye sab nahi chalta" but frankly please try atleast some of them to see if those make any
difference
1) Before we start driving, think about the destination and the route to be taken, timing of our
travel. Depending on that we can decide if any alternate, shortest,congestion free route is available
2) Before start check the break and lights,horn,indicators and ofcourse fuel. if you are driving in car and if it is raining certainly check the wiper as it would be hell if you drive with a defective one
3) Dont follow closely behind any vehicle and certainly not behind an auto for two reasons
a) The autos dont have a see through screen where you can judge the traffice ahead of it
b) The may turn suddenly and go over a pot hole which you cannot
4) If you see a pot hole suddenly on a busy road dont just take a right or left to avoid it.You may be hit by a vehicle from behind.Try to slow down or give some hand signal.
5) Use Indicators effectively. Before 100 mtrs for right and atleast 50 mtrs for left is a good thing
6) Dont rush when you want to take a turn. Wait for the traffic coming from opposite to slow down.
7) Dont rush when the signal turns green. Wait for 2-3 seconds then start. Better be little behind when you are standing at a signal :)
8) No road is built in India to go over 100km. So you should never see your odometer going above 100 on highway.
9) Always look in the Blind spot when you are taking turn. I know it is impossible in indian conditons but certainly when you are taking a turn when the traffic is more it is helpful
10) Dont try to squeeze your vehicle in between two bigger vehicles. Nothing but you have to come be behind those heavy vehicles again..
11) Helmet should be mandatory.It not only protects you from accidents but also protects your hair and face from pollution
12) Never accelerate when your attention is not in the front or you are looking sideways.
13) If you use HIGH BEAM in your car. Plesae switch it off. It caused harm to lot of motorists coming from opposite direction.
14) MOST IMPORTANT : RESPECT YOUR FELLOW MOTORISTS..
